A Scrappy Project - Patchwork Tea Towel

Wednesday, July 28, 2010

I must admit I am in desperate need of some scrap organization!  Right now I throw all scraps regardless of size into this bowl I keep on the cutting table.

When it gets to the point that not one more itty-bitty scrap will fit, I empty the bowl into a gallon Ziploc bag.  I now have several Ziplock bags full of awesome scraps of various sizes but have yet to make anything.  That finally changed this weekend!

While shopping at Target on Friday, I came across some plain white flour sack towels and had a light bulb moment.  I remembered a blog post I had seen on Film in the Fridge a long time ago where she used scraps to gussy up a rather boring tea towel.  Perfect!

I got home, pre-washed my towel and got to work sorting my scraps ... oh my!  I really should have put more thought into organizing these as I went.

After finding several scraps from the very pretty and super fun Valori Wells' Nest collection that were all at least 4" tall, my design was set.  I got to work cutting the scraps and sewing them together.  I've never made anything patchwork before and this was a lot of fun!

After I got them all sewed together, I pinned it to the tea towel about 3" from the bottom.

The result?  An easy way to turn a boring, white towel and with scraps only turn it into a super fabulous tea towel that makes me smile when I use it!

Of course now that I've made me one, Mom is demanding one of her own!  I started to make one just like this but I think I'm going to try something a little different out of some of her favorite fabrics, Cloud9 Beyond the Sea. It's going to be a surprise so you'll just have to stay tuned to see!

Oh my gosh..your in my head!! I was just looking at my bag of scarps and trying to think of a cute project to make use of them. Sadly I don't have a cute container like you so I'll just keep sewing my projects shamefully. ;) Thanks for the adorable project!

Oh, what a great idea both the jar, and the the towel. will on the lookout now for a jar to store all the scraps...
Thank you for the inspiration.

I'm so excited y'all like my project! I was surprised by how easy it was and by how much I love it.

The scrap jar is just great! It's amazing how many scraps I can stuff into before it screams "NO MORE". Mine came from the kitchen area of World Market and was pretty cheap as I recall. Score!

I love the tea towel and also love the scrap jar idea, why didn't I think of that? I mean I have a jar for my off cuts of thread which will never be used, whereas the scraps get used for applique. So thanks!
